Why is Education Rewarding?

Students will often ask themselves (at one point or another) an important question: “is the struggle of succeeding in school worth it”? While it’s a good question to ask yourself, sometimes students will come to the wrong conclusion. They may think that school takes too much time and is too expensive to ever have a reasonable return on investment. The problem is that they are not looking at the long-term benefits of an education. Education is something that will benefit you for the rest of your life, both financially and in making you a well-rounded person. Benjamin Franklin once said, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” This is true because education is about so much more than just getting a piece of paper that says you graduated. There are lasting rewards that you can use for the rest of your life.

So what are some of these rewards that come with furthering your education? There are obvious ones like building your resume and helping you get a job, but there are also rewards that often get overlooked. One important benefit that people tend to forget about is that you gain a better understanding of the world. When you go off to college, you will meet people, both students and teachers, that may have a completely different view of the world than you. Having the ability to converse and debate with these people can give you a better understanding of your own worldview. Our brains thrive in these types of environments. Any time we subject ourselves to something different than what we know, our minds grow. This is a priceless advantage that comes with education.

Another benefit of furthering your education is that it makes you more independent. Once you have your degree, no one can take that away from you. It is yours to do with as you please. Jobs can bring you money, but money is a fleeting asset. It can be taken away just as quickly as it was acquired. Knowledge, on the other hand, will stick with you. It is an asset that stays with you your whole life, and it can be an incredible tool if you use it right.

Finally, going to college and furthering your education can help you build a network of people to expand your opportunities. We have all heard that one of the best ways to get a job is to know the right people. College is one of the best places to meet these people. Professors, or even other students, can have endless connections with companies and employers. College allows you to connect with these people and build relationships with them so that they can help you find a job when the time comes.

You may have your hesitations about continuing your education. You might think that it is too expensive, or it will take up too much of your time, but there are ways to alleviate some of these worries. A scholarship can help you achieve all these benefits that we just talked about and mitigate some of the risks. So, if you are on the fence about going to college, remember that education is an investment that will keep paying itself off the rest of your life.
