3 Of The Most Common Dental School Questions And How To Stand Out

COMMON DENTAL SCHOOL QUESTIONS

After applying to dental schools, one of the most exhilarating next steps is to be asked to attend an interview. If you are contacted for an interview, the dental school is seriously considering you as a candidate. You may be wondering what you can do to distinguish yourself from the other candidates, especially since each person is asked many of the same interview questions. We wanted to offer some suggestions on how to prepare for three of the most common dental school questions and what you can do to help yourself stand out.

Question 1: Tell me about yourself.

In many cases, this is going to be the first question you are asked. Be sure to answer the general information in a concise manner, but also be sure to have some answers that make you unique. What about yourself helps you stand out from a crowd? You will be asked this in every interview, so prepare your answer and practice it as much as you can.

Question 2: Why do you want to be a dentist?

This is another question you will be asked in each interview. It is important to be honest with your answer. The people you are meeting with host these interviews regularly and are good at weeding out prospects who are not being truthful. Think about a personal experience that made you decide you wanted to become a dentist and be passionate with your response.

Question 3: Why do you want to come here for dental school?

You might be interviewing at a school that is not your number one choice and is more of a safety school, but you are not going to divulge that information. Research the school, find out what aspects of the school are important. If possible, find someone from the school and interview them. Be sure to share your experience, as it shows the interviewer you took the initiative to learn more about the school.

Before your interview, be sure to practice as much as you can. Practice in front of a mirror, ask friends and family to help you. Your current professors may even be willing to help. It also doesn’t hurt to record yourself to see what questions you need to practice more.
