We have reached the last installment of our series devoted to the timeline of important steps to take during each of your undergraduate years. Senior year is an important and exciting time. This year will focus primarily on preparing for dental school and wrapping up any loose ends in your undergraduate career.

During the School Year

First and foremost, it is important to finish any courses that are needed to receive your degree. Although not required by all schools, current dental students recommend taking additional courses in biological sciences. Dental school is more fast paced than undergraduate studies, so the more familiarity you have with the course study, the better.

It is also important to prepare for interviews during this time. Make sure that you have at least one appropriate interview outfit. Speak with your college career center or school’s pre-dental organization for mock interview opportunities. The more practice you have interviewing, the better off you will be.

Offers of admission typically start to arrive after December 1st. Be mindful of the response time and be as early as possible in your acceptance to your school of choice. If you are interested in applying for financial aid, it is best to complete any applications sooner rather than later.

During the Summer

First of all, congratulations on your graduation! Now is the time to truly prepare for your experience in dental school. The rigorous course study and classwork will be much more challenging than your undergraduate experience. The amount of reading will greatly increase, so it is recommended to read anything you can over the summer to increase your speed and comprehension. Reading books, magazines, and newspapers frequently is a great way to practice.

It is also important to have some relaxation and enjoy your summer! Don’t forget to establish healthy eating habits and rest when possible. Starting healthy habits now will give your body some support once the workload increases during the upcoming school year.
